While in Congress, I have been a strong supporter of efforts to ensure equal opportunity for all Americans, regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation. In my own office, I have signed and continued to maintain a written commitment affirming that the sexual orientation of an individual is not a consideration in the hiring, promoting, or terminating of an employee in my congressional office. In addition, I have supported specific legislative proposals that would bar discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation

Brave men and women, including gays and lesbians, are currently putting their lives on the line to protect us and are among the courageous veterans who have fought for our country. I believe that our military should continue to recruit and retain the best and the brightest troops for service regardless of their race, gender, or sexual orientation. Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind as Congress considers this legislation.
